fast food is becoming more popular in china, especially among children and teenagers. today, its certainly difficult to think of any other single thing that represents the fast pace of modern society as powerfully as fast food.
there are several reasons for its popularity. first, it is very convenient and saves a lot of time. the trends of modern society seem to all point to one ultimate goal —— saving time, and fast food well serves this purpose. you just go into a fast food restaurant, order your food, and your food is ready in no time. you can either eat it there or take it away. second, its popularity is also attributed to the clean and comfortable environment of fast food restaurants, the excellent service, and the guaranteed qualith of food.
however, in terms of nutrition, fast food is far from satisfactory. it usually does not compose a balanced diet and is low in nutritional value. thus, doctors suggest that people, especially children, eat fast food as little as possible. although cooking at home is time — consuming and the following washing-up tiresome, it offers healthy and delicious meals your body likes and needs. fast food is only a good choice when you are in a hurry and turn to it once in a while.
the aging population is going to become a major concern particularly in more developed countries, but this should not be viewed as something threatening to society. it is a blessing for any individual to live a long and healthy life, only that it could indicate that the responsibilities of caring for the elderly in the future may partly fall on the younger generation. the questions refer especially to how the younger generation could provide answers that are able to move society forward, taking into account a number of social and economic effects on the nation as a whole.
as the proportion of older people is steadily increasing, there are doubts over changes regarding the structure of a modern society. a possible change may the distribution of years of expected lifespan on the social scale, now that the family planning program is in fashion. then, what will this dramatic shift mean for social services, such as health caring and pension on retirement? overall effects, however, are not clear enough; for instance, how older peoples prolonged lives are to be arranged in the social context? at this point, it is interesting to know how todays younger generation would re-think their roles in society if they might live 100 or more and be in good shape? and should working people in society continue to be retired as usual at 60 (for women) and 65 (for men)?
economy-wise, questions also abound. to begin with, what does it mean to a society in which half of the population is aged over 60 and could partially remain in active workforce? this being the case, would people still decide to dedicate their first two decades only to education, the next four decades exclusively to career and parenting, and the last 40 years solely to leisure, awaiting eventual death at 100 or so? so, it is up to the younger generation to make economic sense of people living longer in the future, seeing the aging population less as a burden than a bonus. in other words, if older people could keep working for more years, gains in peoples lifespan should not necessarily cause economic losses to society. neither should possible costs of public health measures, disease preventions, improved living conditions and better medical interventions be considered as a waste of money.
inevitably, the phenomenon of the aging population will become a new reality--socially as well as economically. both generations, the younger and the older, could somehow be expected to work together side by side and all members of society should in diverse ways contribute to the well-being of the whole country. besides, on second thought, who is afraid of the moral responsibility for the aging population?

dangerous sports should be banned危险运动应该被禁止
when we speak of the ancient romans, we can't help thrilling at the slaughter in their arenaswhich they took as entertainment. well, any way, this happened 2, 000 years ago. but aremodern people less blood-thirsty? why do boxing matches attract such universal interest? don't the spectators hope to see some violence?
it is really incredible that in this age we should still allow hunting and bull-fighting, that weshould be prepared to sit back and watch two men fight each other in a boxing ring, that weshould be relatively unmoved by the sight of one or a number of racing cars crashing andbursting into flames. people take part in violent sports because of the high rewards they bring. spectators are willing to pay vast sums of money to see violence. a lot of people aredisappointed if a fight is over in two rounds instead of fifteen just because they have beendeprived of the exquisite pleasure of witnessing prolonged tor ture and violence 。
why should we ban violent sports since people enjoy them so much? the answer is simple: they are uncivilized. for centuries man has been trying to improve himself spiritually andemotionally and this is the 21st century. tremendous progress has been made in science andtechnology, social welfare systems are in operation in many parts of the world, and big effortshave been made to increase public wealth. these changes have come about because humanbeings have taken positive steps to change and improve human civilization. if we banneddangerous and violent sports, we would be moving one step further to improving mankind.
to be really happy and really safe, one ought to have at least two or three hobbies, and they must all be real. it is no use starting late in life to say: “i will take an interest in this or that.” such an attempt only aggravates the strain of mental effort. a man may acquire great knowledge of topics unconnected with his daily work, and yet hardly get any benefit or relief. it is no use doing what you like; you have got to like what you do. broadly speaking, human beings may be divided into three classes: those who are toiled to death, those who are worried to death, and those who are bored to death. it is no use offering the manual labourer, tired out with a hard week’s sweat and effort, the chance of playing a game of football or baseball on saturday afternoon. it is no use inviting the politician or the professional or business man, who has been working or worrying about serious things for six days, to work or worry about trifling things at the weekend.
it may also be said that rational, industrious useful human beings are divided into two classes: first, those whose work is work and whose pleasure is pleasure; and secondly, those whose work and pleasure are one. of these the former are the majority. they have their compensations. the long hours in the office or the factory bring with them as their reward, not only the means of sustenance, but a keen appetite for pleasure even in its simplest and most modest forms. but fortune’s favoured children belong to the second class. their life is a natural harmony. for them the working hours are never long enough. each day is a holiday, and ordinary holidays when they come are grudged as enforced interruptions in an absorbing vocation. yet to both classes the need of an alternative outlook, of a change of atmosphere, of a diversion of effort, is essential. indeed, it may well be that those whose work is their pleasure are those who most need the means of banishing it at intervals from their minds.

should the golden week holidays beabolished?
there is no denying the fact that the introductionof the golden week holidays in china has considerably promoted the development of thenationsquo;s economy and touring industry and enriched peoplesquo;s life. people around the countryhave spent more time and money traveling and relaxing themselves.
as every coin has two sides, the golden week holidays have also brought about piles ofproblems. for one thing, due to the fact that people across the country are spending theirvacations during the same period of time, it is terribly crowded almost everywhere: trains, buses, hotels, scenic spots, etc., which have ruined peoplesquo;s mood for vacations. for another, some businessmen take advantage of the weeklong holidays and raise the price ofcommodities and services.
personally, i believe that it is necessary for people to have long vacations, but there is noneed for them to have the vacations during the same period of time. instead, they should beallowed the freedom to arrange their own vacations. only in this way can they really relax andrefresh themselves for a new round of work.
